I cut up unused drawings from my BodyType series and made BodyType Masks. The Masks are multidimensional, made of cut paper India ink drawings, sliced and constructed mostly without adherents.
The features in the masks are distorted and abstracted. Their appearance and expressions change depending on the perspective.
The MaskBod photos are partial nude self-portraits, wearing the masks with cable release in hand. I chose to keep the hand with the cable release in the photo to stress the reference to privacy, isolation and solitude.
The mask stays in black/white/gray tones and appears to be a drawing. There are lines, marks made by the hand, they then shift into the skin and body.
The photos are not posed. I catch the body in the act of doing something.
The mask covering the face renders it anonymous and takes away a sense of time, age, expression, skin color or tone.
With a non skin-like shade of blue. Martian-like, otherworldly. I think about shedding the beauty expectations placed on women. The image is an invert. Yet the color pushes it out of normalcy into something more organic, primal and raw.
